Look who’s giving up his thumb! Well giving up sucking on his thumb at least…we will keep the thumb for other useful stuff like holding onto pencils and giving thumbs up. At Cohen’s conference on February 24th a goal was brought up about keeping his fingers out of his mouth. It wasn’t specific to his thumb because he had been starting to chew on his fingers as well. So we discussed if getting him to quit sucking his thumb was necessary. Although agreed it wasn’t necessary, it was something we should start to address. Well we didn’t take anytime and came home and put a plan into place. We made a chart where he got a sticker each day he didn’t suck his thumb and after a week full of stickers he got a toy. Off we went to the store to buy a toy as well as a special snack he could have each night if he did well that day. Well it’s been over a week and he’s had great success. He earned that first toy and what do you know, it was the character he was hoping for out of his blind bag. He only really struggles if he isn’t wearing a Band-Aid on his thumb. It was just such a big habit that he needs the reminder to not do it. As far as the other fingers in his mouth, that’s improved greatly too. He may need a reminder here or there for that but nothing we consider to be a problem anymore. He really made it much easier on us than we ever thought. Go figure!
