Hard to imagine it was a year ago we went through the 2nd edition of potty training. Well here we go again for the third and final time. Were we really ready for this? No, not at all. Brynna just turned two and I wasn’t in any hurry yet the timing made the most sense to try now. She would tell us when she was poopy and she wanted to sit on the potty. She had more signs she was ready then the other two did and they were successful so why not right?! Yet we still didn’t hold out hope since she was so young. I know kids do it at this age but it just seems so young.
On Saturday August 22nd we went ahead and started with the same method as the other two. I had a meeting at the gym and arrived back home at 7:45. Brynna had been up for 15 minutes and Troy failed to take off her diaper right away. Not a huge deal but we may have missed an opportunity to get her to have success first thing in the morning. We had her sit as often as she would cooperate. Thankfully she isn’t as stubborn as I would have thought but it did take some persuading to get her to sit at times. So we were able to get her to sit but did she actually go on the potty? No…not before nap time. We put a diaper on at nap and thought for sure she was just going to wake up soaking wet. But no she woke up completely dry. Kept having her sit and it wasn’t until shortly after 5:00 that she went pee on the potty for the first time. She had two minor accidents that night but had a couple more successes. Diaper back on for bedtime and again she woke up dry. This girl surely can hold it. At first this was very frustrating, the more successes you think the better. But it was also a very good thing because it meant very few accidents.
I think we made potty training harder than it needed to be with her. She was way more ready than we could have imagined. We simply just didn’t trust her. From Day 1 she would tell us when she needed to go potty. And it was those times that she would go. She’s of course had a few accidents where she was telling us a little late but most of the time she realizes she needs to go and gets to the potty in time. But there are also times she says she needs to go and then doesn’t. So we spent a lot of time trying to get her to sit on the potty when she wouldn’t do anything on there anyway because she didn’t feel the urge to go. Once we relaxed a little bit and gave her more freedom it has been better for us all. No trying anything and everything to get her to sit on the potty. She actually surprises us and goes potty many times all on her own.
That first week definitely was an adjustment for her and us. It took her that first week to really figure out what she needed to do with #2. Many times she would start to go then say something. But she’s now figured it out and has been successful going #2 on the potty all on her own. (Which is a welcome change to the 6 months of torture Cohen pout us through) After that first day of no peeing in the diaper she started to pee again at nap and bedtime. We figured this would take some time since she is really young. But now that she gets the whole pee process we are able to get her to go at times when we need her to. At nap time or bedtime or if we happen to be going somewhere, she will now go if we make her sit (if she needs to of course). Which this really took some frustration away because going out in public with a new potty trainer is nerve racking. Are they going to have an accident? The other bonus is now that she goes before nap or bedtime she has been staying dry. We’re going to give it a little more time to see if she keeps doing well but we could be diaper free very very soon!! Crazy!! (Too bad I’ll be stuck with diaper duty for some time yet…but having half my life diaper free is still very exciting!)
She’s so darn cute in those undies! But boy oh boy does it make her seem old. I’ll take the no diapers but can I have my baby back too?
